Did ABC’s The Middle Just Spoof the National Book Awards?
On tonight’s episode of The Middle, a high school girl is elated to find out she made the cheerleading squad until - oops! - the mean girl squad leaders inform her that their advisor made a mistake in calling her. The dialogue exchange below should be familiar to those who followed the whole Chime/Shine imbroglio for this year’s National Book Awards YA nominations:
“But of course now that you get that there was a mixup, you understand you’re going to have to step down.”
“No.”
“What do you mean, no?”
“I’m a cheerleader and I want to stay a cheerleader.”
“You don’t really want to be part of something you didn’t really earn, do you?”
“More than anything.”
“But there can only be eight cheerleaders, and here’s the thing - you’re not one of them.”
“Well, here’s my thing: If you hadn’t called me and told me I made the team, I would have been heartbroken but I would have gotten over it. But you did call me, so I told everyone I know that I’m a cheerleader - my family, my friend, my pen pals in Brazil AND Toronto - so to step down now would be humiliating.”
