My Favorite Books of 2012
Here’s the only year-in-review that matters to my bibliophile heart: my favorites of the many awesome books released in 2012.
Sorry Please Thank You: Stories by Charles Yu
Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
The Fifty Year Sword by Mark Z. Danielewski
Unterzakhn by Leela Corman
The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories: Volume 2 by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and hitRECord
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
The Vanishers by Heidi Julavits
Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway
Every Day by David Levithan
Dare Me by Megan Abbott
The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
The Hive by Charles Burns
The Dog Stars by Peter Heller
Arcadia by Lauren Groff
The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle
Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
Honorable mention to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. It was published in 2011 but I read it in 2012, and oh, I love it so much.
And yes, as it happens, quite a few of those books are ones I either worked on or worked adjacent to. This doesn’t mean I’m biased, it just means I have been very, very lucky to work on some fantastic books this year.
Also, because I work in publishing, I am sometimes as much as a year ahead of releases in my own reading schedule. As such, I already have a preliminary list of some of my favorite books of 2013. You’d do well to snap these up as soon as they’re published because they are all freaking amazing.
Scent of Darkness by Margot Berwin
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
Everything is Perfect When You’re a Liar by Kelly Oxford
Self-Inflicted Wounds by Aisha Tyler
Kiss Me First by Lottie Moggach
Vampires in the Lemon Grove by Karen Russell
Snapper by Brian Kimberling
The Smart One by Jennifer Close
The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat by Edward Kelsey Moore
Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg
Bonus list - books on my ever-expanding to-read pile that I am reasonably confident would have made it onto my Favorites of 2012 list if I’d managed to read them before midnight tonight, but alas I didn’t:
Beautiful Ruins, The Middlesteins, Where’d You Go, Bernadette, and This is How You Lose Her
